The lunar landing that had been chased from June 24 to June 28 is now working an opportunity no earlier than July 1, after navigation teams ran the descent against updated terrain models and decided they wanted the Sun a little higher over the candidate site. Each slip has bought margin rather than burned it, and the vehicle remains healthy in its parking orbit while controllers wait for the geometry they want.
South-polar landings are unforgiving in a way that equatorial ones are not. The Sun never climbs far above the horizon, so shadows are long and deep, slopes are steep, and a boulder the descent camera cannot see until the last hundred meters can end a mission that has otherwise gone perfectly. Astronomers reported a tentative detection of an atmosphere around a temperate super-Earth roughly 40 light-years away, teased out of the way starlight dims and reddens as the planet crosses its host star. The signal is consistent with a thin, carbon-bearing envelope—the kind of result that, a decade ago, would have been impossible to attempt on a world this small.
The careful framing matters as much as the claim. A transmission spectrum like this is a fraction of a percent of the star's light, and a restless, spotty star can mimic the very molecules an atmosphere would show. The authors present the atmosphere as favored, not proven, and they lay out exactly which follow-up observations would confirm it or break it. Deep Field: reading a galaxy's history in its light
A new survey resolved a cluster of galaxies as they appeared less than a billion years after the Big Bang—light that has been traveling toward us for more than thirteen billion years, captured as a faint smear and then patiently pulled apart into individual objects. The surprise is not that galaxies exist this early. We expected that. The surprise is how orderly some of them already look.
Several of these systems show the smooth, rotating disks and concentrated cores that, in our textbooks, take billions of years of mergers and settling to build. Finding them already assembled when the universe was a toddler suggests that the first rounds of star formation ran faster and more efficiently than most models assume—that the cosmos got organized in a hurry.
There is a useful humility in results like this. Each generation of telescope pushes the 'first galaxies' boundary earlier, and each time, the universe turns out to have been busier than we guessed at that frontier. This survey does not overturn the standard story so much as compress its opening chapters, handing theorists a specific, measurable problem: build galaxies this tidy, this fast, without breaking everything else we know.

Orbital Economy: the launch backlog is the story
Two funding rounds and one launch-services award this week all point at the same constraint: there is more demand for orbit than there is capacity to reach it. A satellite-servicing startup closed a late-stage round on the pitch that a tug which can refuel or reposition a healthy spacecraft turns a disposable asset into a serviceable one, and a propulsion supplier raised to scale production of the small thrusters that every constellation now needs by the thousand.
The thread connecting them is the launch backlog.
